The book is beautifully worked. The leather cover is very well done, the pages are thin but with a great quality. The ink is good (it does not wipe then you touch it) and the pages do not stick together. The book has a beautiful ribbon. Nothing to complain!I was a little bit afraid regarding the language. I am not an English native, and I did read reviews saying that you will need a dictionary for evey word in the book. That is not true!The book is written in the old English and therefore is a bit more difficult than any other book, but it is beautifully challenging. Indeed there are some words that I had to look up in a dictionary, but it was simply because I did not encounter the words before (example : Ifrit =An ifrit is an enormous winged creature of smoke, either male or female, who lives underground.....)Like any other good book, it requires time to read it. But after the first stories, eveything is much easier to read. I really enjoy it.I have only one comment. Not all stories are suited for children! In particular the Tale of Scheherazade, is definitely not suited for children.I do recommend the book, and I would buy it again.

Bleibt er nahe am Text oder paraphrasiert er viel? Bildet er die Sprache des Werks nach, oder die der Zeit der Übersetzung?Für den an Texttreue interessierten Leser macht Burton, wie man am obigen Beispiel sehen kann, alles falsch. Burton exotisiert und archaisiert; er dichtet nach und seine Quellen sind teilweise fragwürdig; doch, und das steht fest, er tut dies einfach göttlich unterhaltsam. So wie Waleys "Monkey" ist auch Burtons "Arabian Nights" mehr als nur eine Übersetzungsleistung, sondern selbst ein Kunstwerk für sich, das in seiner Zeit wohl ziemlich spektakulär gewirkt haben muss.So sollte man sich denn überlegen, was man lesen möchte. Die 1001 Nacht möglichst originalgetreu, in moderner Sprache und mit belegten Quellen? Dann greife man lieber zu Ott oder (im englischen) zu Hadawy. Wem aber dies nicht das höchste Gut ist und einfach nur unterhalten werden möchte, der bekommt bei Burton eine Übersetzung, die ähnlich ist wie sein Leben war: bunt, überquellend, duftend, schillernd und würzig; wenn man mit der archaischen Sprache klarkommt, was für deutsche Leser das größte Hindernis sein dürfte.Die knapp über 1000 Seiten starke Penguin-Ausgabe wartet mit extrem dünnen, etwas gräulichem Papier und einem leicht verwaschenen Druck auf. Weißraum sucht man leider vergebens. Ein Vorwort von A.S. Byatt über die Text- und Übersetzunggeschichte sowie fast 200 Seiten von Burtons eigenen Endnoten komplettieren die Ausgabe.Aber nun genug der trockenen Worte. Shahrazad, tell thy tale, and tell it quickly.

Das Buch ist wirklich toll verarbeitet. Es wirkt sehr hochwertig und sieht klasse aus. Ein echter Blickfang in jedem Bücherregal!

Considered by most to be the definitive translation of this cobble of stories, some of which were truly old, others of which the ink was barely dry when the translation was started. By now incorporated into almost every facet of Western society, nevertheless these tales are still a good read, with some interesting things to say and a very interesting point of view on life.

A hauntingly beautiful book; I fell in love with the wild, strange, exotic prose style. To the reader who was bored at having to look up so many words, I recommend _See Spot Run_.
